Chvrches is a Scottish synth-pop band and made up of Lauren Mayberry (vocalist), Iain Cook (vocalist / keyboardist)and Martin Doherty (vocalist / keyboardist).
This band was formed in Glasgow in 2011.
Chvrches are influenced strongly by ’80s pop, and they’ve mentioned in interviews that they are big fans of Cyndi Lauper, Kate Bush, and The Cocteau Twins.
Chvrches debuted their first demo, “Lies,” on the Neon Gold blog in May 2012, and they were pretty much immediately popular on the internet. At the end of the year, they released “The Mother We Share” as their debut single. Also they built on their hype by touring through 2012, with headlining festival gigs mixed in with high-profile support slots with like-minded bands.
Then they finally released an album named “The Bones Of What You Believe” in 2013. The alubum entered number nine on the U.K. albums chart and the Top 20 on the charts in Canada, Australia, and the United States, among other countries.
In September 2015, the second album “Every Open Eve” was released. They got Best British Band at the NME Awards and British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards.
The third album “Love Is Dead” was just released in May 2018. They have become more and more famous.
Iain Cook (vocalist / keyboardist) recorded “Blue Sky Archives’ EP”. He invited Lauren Mayberry (vocalist) to sing on some demos he had recorded with Martin Doherty (vocalist/ keyboardist). Iain and Martin had known each other since went to same school.

When they started the band (2011), they wrote songs inspired by Prince, Depeche Mode and Kate Bush. First recordings, “The Mother We Share” and “Lies,” generated enough online buzz to land the trio an opening slot on Passion Pit’s 2012 UK tour. The following year Chvrches ranked fifth on the BBC’s Sound of 2013 list. They had a North American tour in 2013 and released their debut album in September of that year.
Who is a leader?
The Leader of Chvrches is Lauren Mayberry (vocalist). She has a Masters degree in journalism and had experiened working as a freelance writer, contributing to music website The Line Of Best Fit from 2009-2010. She won a journalism award of 2010 for an article she wrote about the hygiene of body piercing. In addition, Lauren was in two bands which one group was called Boyfriend/Girlfriend and another was called Blue Sky Archives.
About Iain Cook and Martin Doherty
Iain Cook is vocalist and keyboardist in this group. But he plays synthesizers, plus some guitar and bass as well. Before Chvrches, he was a member of the Scottish indie bands Aerogramme and The Unwinding Hours.
Martin Doherty is also vocalist and key boad and he plays synthesizers and samplers as well. He used to be a touring member of the indie band The Twilight Sad.

About new album (May 2018)
In May 2018, Chvrches’s third album which the title is “Love Is Dead” was released. Lauren Mayberry mantioned “There are good things and bad things in the world. You have to accept both of them to attract either one.” “This title asks about ‘Empathy Death’.”
These days the whole world is in chaos and there are various opinions. The title “Love Is Dead” is influenced by like this situation.
